Five NC Performing Arts groups selected for ISSMA State Finals

This past Friday and Saturday (May 2 & 3) several groups from the North Central Performing Arts Department competed in the ISSMA State Qualifying Events. Of the 779 bands, orchestras, and choirs which participated in ISSMA performance contests this spring, 162 elected to compete in the State Qualifying Event last weekend. Each ensemble was required to perform difficult selections from the required lists as well as sight read an unknown work for a panel of adjudicators. Five NCHS ensembles earned the chance to perform at the State Finals this weekend. It is a huge honor for a school to have one group selected to perform at the state finals, let alone five! There are a few other school corporations with three groups selected for the finals, but NC leads the charge with an amazing five groups selected to perform!

The NCHS Descants will perform on Friday evening, May 9, in the ISSMA State Treble/Men’s Choir State Finals. In addition, the NCHS Wind Ensemble will perform at the ISSMA Concert Band State Finals, the NCHS Symphony Orchestra will perform at the ISSMA State Orchestra State Finals, and NCHS Counterpoints and King’s Court will perform at the ISSMA Mixed Choir State Finals, all on Saturday, May 10.

Research shows that participation in band, choir, and orchestra will have a positive impact on student academic success. The members of these NCHS ensembles certainly prove many of the recent studies. 8 of the 9 National Merit Semi-Finalists from NCHS participate in the performing arts. In addition, of the top 25 from each class, 13 of the seniors, 13 of the juniors, 12 of the sophomores, and 23 of the freshman all participate in performing arts classes at NCHS.

These amazing students have benefited from the support and excellent training of the collective effort of 7 elementary music teachers, 9 middle school Performing Arts teachers, 8 high school Performing Arts teachers, and countless private lesson instructors on the north side of Indianapolis. In addition, incredible parental support and individual hard work on the part of each student has resulted in the continued excellence of the Performing Arts at NC.

We invite you to come hear 273 of NC’s best and brightest perform. Tickets are $5 and available at the door. If you are unable to support these students with your attendance at the performances, please follow this unfolding story at www.msdwtmusic.info or follow on twitter at @ncperformingart. Updates will be posted periodically this weekend.
