Retiring Administrators

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (December 10, 2014) – Washington Township is celebrating the careers of two longtime administrators, as they retire at the end of this month. Dr. Karol Farrell- Director of Special Services, and Mrs. Marsha Reynolds – Director of Elementary Education, share a combined 78 years of dedicated service to education.

Dr. Karol Farrell began her tenure with Washington Township in 1988. Her educational experiences include being a teacher for special education, consultant, trainer, coordinator for special education and director of special services. She has been a leader in the field of special education by serving as the President or Chairperson for many organizations at the local, state and national level. Karol has received numerous awards that include being named as an Outstanding Young Educator by the Salina Kansas Jaycees early in her career, recognized twice as the outstanding administrator of the year for Washington Township and receiving “The Norman R. Turchan Administrator of the Year Award. Most recently, she was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by ICASE for her leadership and years of service for children with disabilities in Indiana.

Mrs. Marsha Reynolds retires from Washington Township as the Director of Elementary Education, after having been an elementary teacher, a magnet school coordinator, and an elementary principal within four school districts. She has received awards as Indianapolis Public Schools Teacher of the Year, The Olin Davis Exemplary Teacher of Economic Education Award, The Larry Senesh Economic Administrator Award, The Joseph Nygaard Award from Butler University, two Lilly Endowment Creativity Awards, and The Indiana Network for Early Language learning, Champion of IN-NELL Award.

Mrs. Reynolds served as the founding principal of Forest Glen School, the first public international school in the state of Indiana. More recently, she served as principal at Crooked Creek Elementary School in Washington Township. During her nine years as principal, Crooked Creek was named a 2006 National Blue Ribbon School. She helped to build strong economic education for all students and an internationally focused school with a Chinese school partner. The school now offers both Chinese language and culture that is taught daily. As the Director of Elementary Education in Washington Township, Mrs. Reynolds continued her commitment to building the global focus within the district. One example of strengthening international partnerships included teaching teachers about economic education at the Peking University Primary School in China. She also accompanied district principals and teachers to China, as further partnerships were expanded.

Working with all elementary schools in the district as the Director of Elementary Education, Mrs. Reynolds has played a key part in developing the district as an entire International Baccalaureate (IB) school district, one of seven public school districts in the country to be IB authorized.

Mrs. Reynolds is proud of the internationally minded commitment and work being accomplished by students, teachers, administrators, parents, and the community, within the Washington Township school district.

Washington Township wishes both of these amazing administrators, a wonderful retirement and we thank them for their many years of service to Washington Township students and families.
