February 2015 Feedback on Possible 15-17 School Calendar Modifications

The School Board approved a 2015-16 and 2016-17 calendar that are available at http://www.msdwt.k12.in.us/calendar/

The School Board has approved the calendar for 2015-16, but after discussions with our Teaching and Learning division and feedback from teachers, we began to explore ways to build in more professional development opportunities for staff. Additionally, we know that many districts have piloted and implemented alternative, at home learning opportunities for students, and we would like to explore a pilot for that as well.

Two modifications to the calendar are being explored for feedback during the month of February 2015. There are three options after we review survey feedback:
1. Keep the 2015-17 calendars the same, as approved by the Board
2. Take one of the suggested modifications to the School Board for the 2015-17 calendars
3. Take both of the suggested modifications to the School Board for the 2015-17 calendars

Draft Modification #1: First Tuesday after the first Monday in November (Election Day)
• Students would not attend school but would have an at home learning experience
• Teachers and administrators report to work for professional development (additional staff as determined by divisions)
• We would be able to increase the number of school sites available as polling sites.
• Students who meet qualifications would be able to volunteer at the polls

Draft Modification #2: First Monday of second semester
• No school day for students (the day prior to Winter Break will be a normal school day (finals) and the Monday following Winter Break will be a staff day only – no students)
• Teachers and administrators would report to work for professional development (additional staff as determined by divisions)
• The last week of the first semester in December would include student early release days at all schools (approximately one hour earlier) to allow teacher work time to complete grades.

Note: The 16-17 calendar would be similar with corresponding dates. These options maintain the state required 180 school day calendar, have no additional financial implications for the school district, and could possibly result in a reduction of costs. Lastly, all options for child care would be open on the dates listed above that are typically available on other non-school days.

Please give your feedback on these two possible modifications at the following link by February 23rd: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/7JCQSHC
