JELCC Media Students Win State Awards

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (April 13, 2015) – Six J. Everett Light Career Center students won state awards at the annual Indiana Association of School Broadcasters State Contest held March 9th at the University of Indianapolis.

Michael Thompson and Agappe Hakizimana from the Music-Sound Production class at JEL were crowned state champions in their respective categories.

Thompson won the Radio Spot Production category with his public service announcement entry entitled, “Hand Me The Keys.” The judges stated that the vocal performance was very professional.

Hakizimana, was the Radio In-Depth feature state champion. He produced an autobiographical piece using the currently popular spoken-word style of delivery. In the 7-minute recording, Agappe spoke with passion telling the story of his challenging childhood in Rwanda, through the time his family was driven out of their home country, to his arrival and life in America. The judges stated that the combination of the music and storytelling was excellent.

Other students recognized were, Stephen Wade and Alec Suarez, who placed 2nd in the Radio Imaging category and Terica Anthony and Michael Cluff who were state finalists in the Radio Air Personality competition.
