On May 8, 2013 at the meeting of the Washington Township Schools Board of Education, a very special scholarship was awarded. It was not a scholarship for Top of the Class, nor was it a scholarship for athletic excellence. This scholarship award recipient was recognized for most improved academics in four years at North Central High School.  

“So many times, it is the student with a 4.0 GPA or the top performing athlete on the varsity team who is recognized for excellence. Tonight, we are so very proud to be recognizing unwavering effort and motivation to improve academic achievement,” said Dr. Nikki Woodson, MSDWT Superintendent.

The $2000 Superintendent’s Award is sponsored by the Teacher’s Credit Union (TCU). “The TCU Foundation is proud to support the students of Washington Township in their efforts to further their education,” said Karol Griffin, Executive Director of the TCU Foundation. “We strive to lift the barriers and hurdles that our youth face while climbing the ladders of academia.”

There is a best-kept secret at North Central High School and that is the offering of dance classes as an elective credit option.  It’s not a new program, but one that needs to be shouted and “danced” about!  Taking the dance class can satisfy the fine arts requirement for the Indiana Honors Diploma for those students on that track.

 Mrs. LeAnn Haggard, the teacher of the class, said that the program started with one class with 12 students and now has expanded to four classes with 120 students.  It has literally grown by leaps and bounds!  There are three entry-level classes and one advanced level class that requires an audition. 

 There is no shortage of dance genre exploration in the class because a student in just one semester may learn a Jazz, Tap, Musical Theater and Ballet piece for the Fall show and then the same student the next semester may learn a Clogging, African, Latin and Hip piece for the Spring show.  Mrs. Haggard said, “I want my students to be exposed to as many styles of dance as possible.  This is a dance education that is happening right here at the high school level and for some of these students, they will never be able to afford this kind of experience on their own.”

 The Dance Ambassadors, which is the advanced level class, is for students who have either extraordinary natural talent, or they have had technical training in one of the classics; ballet, jazz or modern dance.  This group becomes a bridge to either college dance or professional dancing and their focus is composition and choreography. 

Coming up on Monday, May 6^th, all North Central dance students will be performing for family, friends and anyone in the community that wants to see the wonderful dance going on at North Central High School.  Audience members should park on the South end of the campus (next to the tennis courts) and enter door #24 and follow the signs to the Performance Classroom.  Three shows will be available: 6:00 p.m., 7:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.  Each performance will be approximately 45 minutes in length and there is no admission charge. 

 “For some students, this may be the only time they get to perform on stage, and for others this may be the start of a career in dance,” said Mrs. Haggard.  “It’s an exciting prospect. “

For the second consecutive day, many schools in Indiana experienced disruptions while administering the ISTEP+ Online Multiple Choice Test in grades 3 – 8. The schools in Washington Township were no exception.  As a result of the disruption,  Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz suspended all testing for the remainder of Tuesday, April 30. Superintendent Ritz said:  “I am greatly disappointed to learn that Indiana schools had their ISTEP+ testing interrupted for a second consecutive day.  Like all Hoosier parents, students and teachers, I find these interruptions frustrating and unacceptable.”    Mrs. Ritz promised to communicate directly with schools regarding the time frame to resume testing.

Washington Township Schools remain ready to resume testing when we are given the go ahead.  We hope that you will continue to prepare your students for testing by getting a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast before school. We also hope you will encourage them to do their personal best when the test resumes. Our students have been working diligently to perform well on this test.  We want to ensure that they have the optimal testing conditions to succeed on ISTEP+.  Thank you for your support and have a good evening.
