Middle Years Program
The Middle Years Program
The Middle Years Program (MYP) is an all-inclusive program that serves students in sixth through tenth grade in each of the three Washington Township middle schools and North Central High School. All MYP teachers teach Indiana state standards to all students. The MYP encourages students to become critical and reflective thinkers through hands-on activities that emphasize making connections between the traditional subject areas and real-world applications.
The IB MYP model, as illustrated below, requires that students study their mother tongue (Language A), a second language (Language B), humanities, technology, mathematics, arts, sciences, and physical education.
MYP’s Subject Areas:
All subjects are considered equal valuable life skills. When a student is studying a unit in one of their courses, they will be able to view the subject through many perspectives, or lenses. Below are the eight (8) subject areas encompassed by IB curriculum framework:
MYP’s Areas of Interaction:
The five AREAS OF INTERACTION are the five themes that provide a framework for learning within and across the eight subject groups. The Areas of Interaction help students and teachers make connections among subjects and to the larger world.
- Approaches to Learning (ATL) – encourages students to take increasing responsibility for their learning,to question and evaluate information critically, and to seek out and explore the links between subjects.
- Health and Social Education – encourages students to explore personal, physical and societal issues and to develop respect for body and mind.
- Environments – encourages students to become aware of their interdependence with the world and to develop responsible and positive attitudes towards their environments.
- Community and Service – encourages students to become aware of their roles and their responsibilities as members of communities. All MYP students are required to become involved with their communities-an involvement that benefits both parties.
- Human Ingenuity – encourages students to examine and reflect on the innovative ways in which humans think, create and initiate change.
