Elementary Schools

A 21st century education includes knowledge of both traditional core subject areas, and also focuses on global mindedness, contemporary global awareness, economics, health & environmental understanding. Students need to learn the core subjects and must also apply their knowledge to understanding and solving real-world challenges. This often occurs through the inquiry approach to teaching and learning. Inquiry classrooms address the required state mandated academic content – but these classrooms, through guiding questions from the teacher, help students gain a deeper understanding of concepts.

All seven Washington Township elementary schools are International Baccalaureate Candidate Schools. The Primary Years Program (PYP) serves each and every student in kindergarten through fifth grade. The focus is to develop each student as an inquirer, problem solver and a lifelong learner. The core subjects are reading, writing, social studies, math, science, arts, and physical education. All students are exposed weekly to a world language of either Chinese or Spanish.

Middle Schools

The middle years can be a challenge for many students and families, and having a successful middle school experience is critical to establishing a strong foundation for success in high school. As a result, MSDWT has worked diligently to create middle schools that are student-focused and parent-friendly. We offer a rich and rigorous curriculum that is being enhanced further with the implementation of the Middle Years Program (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate (IB). All three middle schools were just named IB Candidate Schools where the focus will be to develop each student as an inquirer, problem solver and a lifelong learner. In addition, the three middle schools were all recognized nationally as Schools to Watch, which is an award given to only a select number of schools (99) across the country.

J. Everett Light Career Center

The career center provides students from MSDWT, as well as students from twelve other school districts, with an opportunity to connect academics to the real world of work. Students may take advantage of more than 25 different career-technical programs to explore a variety of areas of interest that might provide a jump start to additional course work in this area. More than a thousand students take advantage of this opportunity as well the chance to receive college credit from Ivy Tech State College, IUPUI, and Vincennes University in more than thirteen areas of study.

 North Central High School

North Central High School continues to be the public high school by which all other high schools in Indiana are measured. Its comprehensive curriculum may be second to none. In addition to having Indiana’s first International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB), North Central is expanding the IB offerings to students in grades nine and ten which will only enhance what is often viewed as the state’s most prestigious IB Diploma Program. The rigorous curriculum extends beyond the IB program in that 26 Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered providing students with the possibility to earn college credit prior to stepping foot on a college campus. In addition, a rich program for students whose needs may not be met through IB or AP is provided to meet the diverse needs of its students.
