MSD of Washington Township Technology Department is proud to announce its first annual summer conference for Literacy and Technology, known as LTEC.  As part of the Indiana Department of Education’s Summer of e-Learning, we invite you to join us on June 13th for an exciting day of keynote presentations, concurrent sessions, and collaboration. The conference will focus on digital literacy, individualized instruction, and harnessing the power of technology to educate students and enhance instruction.

Highlights include:

• Acclaimed educational technology guru, Jim Klein
• A variety of high quality concurrent sessions
• Vendors in the LTEC Interactive Studio
• Networking lunch included
• Prizes

Jude Odell, of Young Audiences, spent an entire week at Nora, teaching students about cultures from around the world. Children in grades Kindergarten, First, and Second, discovered artwork of a tribe in Mexico that expressed themselves through mask making. Each student created a mask that represented their own culture and expression. Students in grades Three, Four, and Five, inquired about Peruvian Animal Bowls. Our artist, who lived in Peru, with the tribe, showed students exactly how and why the Peruvians created Animal Bowls.

Students listed above will have their artwork showcased at Holliday Park through May 1. Artwork is displayed in Holliday Park’s Nature Center.

According to the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IB-PYP),

BALANCED people understand the importance of intellectual, physical and emotional balance to achieve personal well-being for themselves and others (IBO, 2006).

Balanced students participate, cooperate and collaborate as members of a social and intellectual network of learners. They understand the value of using a variety of kills, resources and technology for both work and recreation.

How Parents Can Help Develop Balanced Children

• Make sure your child is participating in a variety of structured activities and activities outside school. 
• Encourage your child to exercise or do sports, especially if you notice your child is spending a lot of time watching TV or playing video games. 
• Discuss the importance of eating a healthy, balanced meal with your child and encourage him/her to choose food from the four food groups. 
• Model balanced behavior by participating in a variety of activities as a family. 
• Provide positive feedback when your child is demonstrating a balanced behavior. 

The fundraiser raised over $400 for their trip.

Lilly Endowment Inc., an Indianapolis-based private philanthropic foundation, selected Nora Elementary’s Art Educator to go on a 4 week renewal journey to Europe this summer. Mrs. Lacey Kilbarger proposed the idea, and was selected along with 100 other Indiana Educators. Mrs. Kilbarger’s proposal was called, “Van Gogh, Picasso and the Ninja Turtles”. She will visit European art locations, specifically London, Amsterdam, Paris, Arles, Venice, Florence, and Rome, which are particularly related to Van Gogh, Picasso and the Italian Renaissance masters. Mrs. Kilbarger will be creating her own artwork along the way while photographing and  journaling along the journey. She plans to share her experiences with her students through Europeans artist units of inquiry, as well as have her own body of artwork on display in an Indianapolis art gallery this Fall.

About the Grant:

For 2013, the Endowment offered up to 100 grants of $10,000 each to Indiana’s public and private school teachers (including guidance counselors and library/media specialists), principals and assistant principals for projects of the individual’s choice.
