WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP SCHOOLS ARE POSITIVELY READY FOR AN EXCITING YEAR

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (August 15, 2011) – Today, the new Superintendent of Washington Township Schools will welcome her staff of approximately 1700 to the 2011-12 school year, at the Opening Day meeting scheduled for 8-9:00 at North Central High School. Among other things, teachers and principals will learn that Superintendent Woodson is deploying the entire Central Office staff out into the schools to offer support on the first 3 days of school (8/17-8/19) at arrival and dismissal times. “This is one very concrete way that we can help the schools feel the support from Central Office,” said Superintendent Woodson. She remembers firsthand how busy the first few days of school are with the logistics as a Principal & teacher.

Dr. Woodson will also announce the start of the Washington Township Advisory Council which will discuss and advise on, district-wide issues. She invites all stakeholders to participate, as Woodson believes feedback from broad based stakeholders is important to her leadership of Washington Township Schools.

These are a few of the many new and innovative support systems kicking off the school year; Over 300 teachers and administrators prepared this summer by attending a two day training for the International Baccalaureate Program. The district is in phase two of a three step accreditation process to be the first K-12 district in Indiana and one of only a few nation-wide, to have every school accredited as an International Baccalaureate World School.  All schools in Washington Township have achieved Candidate Status with International Baccalaureate.

The Elementary Schools marked progress in achieving Adequate Yearly Progress in more categories than in 2010.  The district Adequate Yearly Progress also increased from passing 31 of 33 categories in 2010 to 32 of 33 categories in 2011. This year all Washington Township elementary schools will offer world languages. At 3 of the 7 schools, students will learn Mandarin Chinese, while students at 4 of the schools will learn Spanish. While these classes take place during the school day, there will also be offerings of after school enrichment programs supporting world languages.

Additionally, all district elementary schools have adopted new science resources which include National Geographic books spanning many different science topics. Resources also include inquiry kits that support the Science inquiry process and also tie in with new core standards.

The district’s 3 middle schools, Northview, Eastwood & Westlane  start the year as Schools to Watch designated middle schools. The national award is given to a select group of middle schools across the country who show academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, and who are socially equitable. This marks the first time that all middle schools from the same district have received this prestigious award nation-wide.

North Central, the district’s only high school begins the year with an award from the IDOE for its success with Advanced Placement tests.  Additionally, North Central made tremendous strides with Adequate Yearly Progress in 2011.

Washington Township continues to have superior schools in a supportive community!
