The third grade students at Allsionville Elementary school participated in a program called “Trick –or-Treat for UNICEF”.  After raising $726, many of the students wanted to know exactly where the money was going.   The students then researched the company and found the names of senior management executives.  While researching, the students also learned to write business letters and address envelopes.  Student groups selected a member of UNICEF’s senior management team to write a letter to asking for more information about the company.  The students were very excited when both the vice president of regional funding and vice president for public relations responded to the letters.  Lisa Szarkowski, vice president of public advocacy, was so touched by the letters that she wanted to meet the students personally.  On Monday, March 5, 2012 Lisa arrived from New York and met the students in Mr. Wallace’s third grade class.  She taught the students more about UNICEF and let the students see the actual items their money had purchased.  Students were able to huddle under mosquito nets, taste the food paste that is given to malnourished children, and see the pills required to help clean dirty water. Inquiring students? I think so!
