Counterpoints State Champion Show Choir

The North Central Counterpoints have been named 2018 Mixed Show Choir State Champions by the Indiana State Schools Music Association (ISSMA), and are headed to the Nationals in Nashville, Tennessee on Thursday.

The talented group swept the competition which took place on Saturday (3/17) winning Best Vocals, Best Visuals, and Best Student Instrumental Group.

The Descants, North Central’s Advanced level women’s show choir was a finalist in the competition, placing fifth in the state.

These State titles come after a successful season of competitions with other area schools. At Lawrence Central on March 10th both the Counterpoints and the Descants swept the competition in their respective categories, winning Best Vocals, Best Visuals, Best Student Instrumental Group, and the titles of Grand Champion.

“The choirs work extremely hard all year long to be able to compete at this level,” said Mr. Michael Berg Raunick. “I am very proud of this achievement and even more proud of each individual student.”

The Counterpoints Choir is the top choir at North Central High School and is highly selective. The Counterpoints have been named either Runner-up or Grand Champion for ISSMA State Show Choir, for the past 11 years. They have also won numerous state championships in concert choir over the past 27 years.

The Descants Choir is the top unisex choir at North Central High School and is also highly selective. The Descants were named ISSMA 2017 State Champion Unisex Choir.

Both the Counterpoints and Descants will board a bus at 8:30 on Thursday morning to travel to Nashville, Tennessee where they will compete in the National Show Choir competition. Their scheduled performance times are: Descants, Thursday (3/22) at 7:45pm and Counterpoints, Friday (3/23) at 9:00 am, both at the Grand Ole Opry House.
