Washington Township 2018-2019 State Accountability

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (March 6, 2020) – The Metropolitan School District of Washington Township (MSDWT) received final 2018-19 State Accountability results from the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) on March 4, 2020.  This is approximately nine months after the conclusion of the 2018-19 school year.  Additionally, recent action by the Indiana Legislature created a hold-harmless exemption on these results because of the switch to ILEARN last school.  Accountability results are largely dependent on statewide assessment results, which saw a significant drop in student proficiency last year with only 37.1% of Indiana students passing the ILEARN English Language Arts and Math tests.  This is likely because of inappropriately set cut scores.  These results are different from the 2018-19 Federal Accountability results released in January.  The two sets of accountability results are calculated differently and have different consequences for schools and school districts.

MSDWT saw improved 2018-19 State Accountability results at two schools, Eastwood Middle School and Northview Middle school.  Overall, MSDWT received one A rating, five B ratings, five C ratings, one D rating, and zero F ratings.  Similarly, MSDWT had zero Exceeds Expectations ratings, five Meets Expectations ratings, six Approaches Expectations ratings, and zero Does Not Met Expectations under Federal Accountability.  Note, that there are 12 State ratings and only 11 Federal ratings, as the Federal Accountability Model does not provide district ratings. Additionally, state-mandated assessments and assessment vendors have changed at a tremendous rate in recent years making it incredibly difficult to use state-mandated assessments to measure student academic proficiency and growth.

As a necessary remedy to these issues, MSDWT Leadership continues to implement assessments such as NWEA, Math Facts Benchmarks, and, Fountas and Pinnell Reading Assessments throughout the year to measure student academic proficiency and growth.  MSDWT reviews several data points that compare our student performance against national norms.

Examples of MSDWT student learning during the same period:

  • NWEA Spring 2019 Reading Students Meeting Growth Targets – 80.4%
  • NWEA Spring 2019 Math Students Meeting Growth Targets – 83.5%
  • NWEA 2018-19 Average Growth in Reading Grade Equivalents – 1.3 years
  • NWEA 2018-19 Average Growth in Math Grade Equivalents – 1.6 years
  • Graduation Rate 2018-19 – 89.9%
  • Advanced Placement, Advanced College Project, and International Baccalaureate Courses Enrollment 2018-19 – 40.2%

MSDWT students are making great progress.  We continue to have amazing students, educators, families and schools in Washington Township who are making our community a better place.  Although some of our students may need additional time and support to master the Indiana academic standards, MSDWT students are learning and progressing well academically, socially, emotionally, and culturally.
