Re:      Important Changes to the Reopening of Schools Plan & District Updates

9/15/20

At a Special School Board meeting this morning (September 15, 2020 at 8am), the School Board voted in favor of amendments to the reopening of schools resolution and plan. Below are answers to questions families may have regarding these changes.  Thank you for flexibility and patience as we work through complexities for reopening of schools due to COVID-19.

Q:  Where can I access the audio recording of the Special School Board meeting from this morning and details about other School Board meetings?

A:  Details about School Board meetings are made public and available at the WT website.  Access to the recording of today’s Special School Board meeting can be accessed by the public also.

Q:  Where can I access details of the resolution the board amended this morning and the comprehensive reopening of schools plan document inclusive of the updates?

A: The updated board approved resolution and plan details for reopening of schools can be found on our website.

Q:  What are the changes to the WT reopening of schools plan/resolution?

A:  The School Board amended three major areas of the reopening plan/resolution:

  1. Metrics for threshold to determine school opening/closure were modified
  2. Timeline dates for reopening of schools were modified
  3. Virtual Academy students participation in extra/co-curricular activities and athletics was modified to be allowed

The WT School Board will use the following thresholds to determine school opening or closing based on data from MCPHD COVID-19 School Guidance Dashboard Rate of Positive CasesThe data must maintain threshold range for two consecutive weeks in order to change levels.

Q:  If I want to change my selection made earlier in September for the learning option for my child based on the changes to the Board resolution today, how do I do that and what is the deadline?

A: Selections of In-Person learning or Virtual Academy learning made in Skyward earlier this month are still accessible to you. To change your selection, log into Skyward and follow these instructions. Final changes to selections must be submitted by Sunday, September 20th at 5:00PM EST.  Should you experience difficulty with Skyward indicating this change, please contact your child’s school and notify the administrative assistant in charge of registration of this change request.  If you do not want to change your selection, nothing further needs to be done.

Q: Will students who participate in the Virtual Academy be able to participate in extra/co-curricular activities including athletics?

A:  Yes, Virtual Academy students may participate in extracurricular and/or co-curricular activities or competitions at the secondary level that are offered in-person. All students may also participate in activities that are offered virtually.   Transportation to school will not be provided to students in Virtual Academy who choose to participate in extra/co-curricular activities including athletics.

Q:  How can I review details on reopening plans that are specific to my child’s school?

A:  Each school held a reopening of schools webinar for families, in late August through early September, and recorded those presentations.  Each webinar recording is located on the school websites along with a school based reopening plan document.

Q:  If I selected an in-person learning option and denoted transportation will be needed, how will I find out about bus routes and when?

A:  Only in-person students who selected “bus transportation needed” in the Skyward selection process will be routed for bus transportation.  If you need to review this selection or make a change to it, please review the question above for instructions. Parents will be notified by Transportation through the district call system that routes, bus numbers, and times will be ready for parents to access in Skyward according to the following timeline:

  • Grades PK-2: Friday, September 25th
  • Grades 3-12: Friday, October 2nd

Q: Will there be changes to school meal distribution opportunities?

A: In an effort to better serve families, beginning September 21 through October 19, 2020 (with the exception of Fall Break, 10/5-10/9), Breakfast and Lunch Meal Packs will be available for pick-up curbside at all schools every Monday and Thursday from 10:30am – 1:30pm for all Washington Township students at NO COST.  For families having difficulty picking up meals during the day time hours an evening pick-up option by pre-order request only through MyPaymentsPlus will be available on Monday and Thursday evening at North Central High School and Willow Lake Elementary School from 5:00pm – 6:30pm.  For pre-order instructions for evening pick-up, please visit the Child Nutrition Website.

Beginning October 19, meals will continue to be available for students enrolled in Full-Time Virtual Learning Academy and Hybrid Learning.  For information regarding these meal distribution opportunities please visit the Child Nutrition Website.

Q:  What is an update on ParentSquare communication rollout?

A:  As we begin our launch into ParentSquare as the sole communication platform district-wide, we thank you for your patience as any transition such as this often takes time and practice. During this Phase One portion of our launch, you may receive the same communication from two different sources. We are currently testing our systems and for this reason, you may receive duplicate messages.

In order to receive our messages sent through the ParentSquare system, you need not do anything, these will automatically be sent through the email that you have registered in Skyward. It will be important however to make sure that all of your information and your student’s information is up to date in Skyward (to be clear, Skyward will continue to be the platform through which you maintain your student data. Nothing about Skyward is changing).

If you wish to participate in Parent Square in a more interactive way, you can download the app by following the instructions at this link: https://www.msdwt.k12.in.us/parentsquare/

As we continue to move through the Parent Square launch phases, we will keep you updated as to the progress and timelines in which you can expect all other communication sources to cease.

Q:  How can I enroll my child in before and/or after care when Washington Township returns to in-person learning?

A:  If you need before and/or after school care and selected in-person learning option, please complete the brief survey from AYS so they can plan for needs accordingly:   AYS Survey

Q:  If I have additional questions about reopening of schools who should I contact?

A:  Please contact your child’s Principal if you have additional questions regarding reopening of schools planning.
