Washington Township Schools Announces Partnership with Joseph Maley Foundation to Bring Disability Awareness Education to All Elementary and Northview Middle School in March

 

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – March 1, 2022 – To celebrate Disability Awareness Month, Washington Township Schools have partnered with local nonprofit, Joseph Maley Foundation, to bring their Disability Awareness education program to all MSD Washington Township elementary schools and Northview Middle School, during the month of March.

Joseph Maley Foundation’s mission is celebrating differences and cultivating an inclusive community through education and service of youth in Greater Indianapolis. “We are thrilled to partner with MSD Washington Township to bring this vital programming to their students,” said Erica Christie, Director of Education for Joseph Maley Foundation. “This program, like all of our educational offerings, fosters inclusion, respect, and empathy in our community.”

Disability Awareness is a developmentally-appropriate, standards-based program. Content grows with children, building year after year. Through participating, students learn respect and acceptance of all people.The curriculum aligns with Indiana academic and social-emotional learning standards, and includes Joseph Maley Foundation puppet shows, creative activities, literacy components, and engaging speakers. As of 2022, the Disability Awareness program is a yearly staple in over 50 Greater Indianapolis schools.

“In March during dis/ABILITY Awareness Month, we focus on and celebrate the unique ABILITIES and contributions of people with dis/ABLITIES,”  said Dr. Ghirmay Alazar, Director of Student Services for Washington Township Schools. “We are so excited to partner with the Joseph Maley Foundation to bring this vital program to our Washington Township schools. The Joseph Maley Foundation has been a champion for kids with dis/ABILITIES for many years and we look forward to a long-lasting partnership,” concluded Dr. Alazar.
