Funding will support recruitment and retention of African American teachers and administrators, as well as culturally responsive professional development for all instructional staff members with the purpose of improving student outcomes.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (August 16, 2022) – The MSD of Washington Township is the proud recipient of the Indianapolis African American Quality of Life Initiative (AAQLI) first round of grants distribution, targeted to fund programs and initiatives to improve the quality of life for African American residents.

The MSD of Washington Township is one of 40 Indianapolis / Marion County not-for-profit organizations (and the only MSD corporation) selected by The National Urban League to receive this grant award. The $230,000 awarded to Washington Township Schools, will be used to support recruitment and retention of African American teachers and administrators, as well as culturally responsive professional development for all instructional staff members, with the purpose of improving student outcomes.

“Washington Township is thrilled to be the recipient of this important funding,” said Dr. Nikki Woodson, Superintendent of Washington Township Schools. “With our focus being equitable, affirming, and responsive education for all, these funds will go far in helping us to continue to reach our goals. We are honored to be chosen for this essential work and we are excited and energized to continue to lead the charge in these areas.”

The other organizations awarded by the AAQLI, represent 52 grants with funding totaling more than $21M. The initiative is a partnership between the National Urban League, the Indianapolis Urban League, and the African American Coalition of Indianapolis.  IAAQLI was created in 2020 through a$100M grant to the National Urban League from Lilly Endowment Inc.
