A Final Farewell from Dr. Woodson
Superintendent, MSD Washington Township
Dear Washington Township Schools Families,
As I write this final message for our last newsletter of the school year, my heart is full—with gratitude, reflection, and an overwhelming sense of pride. After 15 years of service in this remarkable district, including 13 as your Superintendent, the time has come for me to say goodbye as I prepare to retire at the end of June.
Serving the students, families, and staff of Washington Township Schools has truly been the greatest honor of my professional life. When I arrived in 2009, I could never have imagined the extraordinary journey ahead. Together, we have navigated seasons of change, faced unprecedented challenges—including a global pandemic—and built a legacy grounded in equity, innovation, and academic excellence.
The progress we’ve made as a community is nothing short of extraordinary. With your support, we secured over $500 million in referendum funding to improve learning environments, raise teacher and staff compensation, and ensure every student has access to the resources they need to succeed. Our graduation rate has increased by nearly 10%, with more than 200 additional students crossing the stage—nearly half of them with advanced diplomas. We expanded access to honors and advanced coursework for all students, and our district consistently ranked first or second in academic performance among peer districts in Indiana.
Our growth goes beyond numbers. Washington Township has seen the highest student enrollment increases in Marion County over the past two years and now serves its largest student body since 2016–17. We’ve welcomed nearly 170 talented, diverse new educators, strengthened teacher retention, and made historic investments in staff well-being. We’ve deepened our commitment to inclusion, belonging, and student wellness—resulting in meaningful reductions in out-of-school suspensions.
Perhaps one of the most visible reflections of our progress is in our learning environments. We opened four beautiful new school buildings and completed major renovations across the district—ensuring that every school reflects innovative teaching & learning environments our staff and students deserve.

Today I hosted a legacy luncheon and had the privilege of gathering with my esteemed predecessors, Dr. White and Dr. Mervilde to welcome Dr. Taylor, who will officially step into the role of Superintendent on July 1. The photo captures a moment I will forever treasure—a symbolic passing of the torch and a powerful reminder of the legacy we share serving an incredible community.
