We Grow Panthers Spotlight

Celebrating Veterans

All Washington Township schools honored and celebrated our community's veterans in different ways. On Sunday, November 9, students from Greenbriar Elementary School performed material that they have been preparing since late August, to honor our veterans and first responders.

Through dancing, singing, reading spoken word poetry, and drumming, students came together with members of the Washington Township community to not only honor these individuals, but also to support the organization Helping Veterans and Families (HVAF).

“Greenbriar Elementary has a long tradition of honoring our veterans through the arts,” said Mr. Blake Busch, Music and Performing Arts Teacher at Greenbriar Elementary. “Many of our student families have current and former military family members, and this event gives us the opportunity to say thank you for your service and we honor you.”

Additionally, Greenbriar teacher Ms. Journey Evans sang a solo at the event to honor our veterans and first responders. As we are reminded of our mission to grow panthers in Washington Township, Ms. Evans’ tribute was especially meaningful, as she is also a North Central High School graduate, class of 2018.

NCHS Fall Musical Highlight

On October 24 and 25, more than 100 students from North Central Performing Arts came together to present this year’s fall musical, Freaky Friday. The production featured two evening performances, a Saturday matinee, and a special Friday matinee attended by over 650 students from Washington Township’s three middle schools—Eastwood, Northview, and Westlane—who enjoyed a sneak peek of the show’s first act. The fall musical unites student actors, designers, and musicians from across disciplines to create a dynamic final production, which this year drew more than 1,400 audience members to the ticketed performances. North Central Theatre continues its proud performing arts tradition, with the student-directed Winter One Acts coming up on February 19 and 20. For more information, visit northcentraltheatre.org.

Highlights in Honor of National STEM Day

IT Pathways - In honor of National STEM Day, our IT Pathway students are tackling real-world challenges! Students are learning to spot security threats and find ways to protect computer networks. These skills are crucial in today's digital world.

Through hands-on projects, Panthers identify weak spots in network security and recommend solutions to keep information safe. They examine actual security threats, discuss their impact on society, and improve their work by reviewing each other's findings.

A recent highlight was a visit from a cybersecurity professional who showed students the cutting-edge tools used in the industry today, giving them a glimpse into their potential future careers.

Students wrap up by presenting their security reports, showcasing what they've learned about protecting networks while building valuable skills for careers in technology and cybersecurity.

Principles of Engineering

Additionally our Principles of Engineering students have been diving into the world of simple machines and robotics. Using VEX robotics kits, they're experimenting with gears, forces, and how machines work efficiently. It's exciting to watch them bring engineering concepts to life through hands-on building and problem-solving challenges.

Autumn Winds Concert

Last Friday, the NCHS Wind Ensemble presented their annual Autumn Winds Concert. The ensemble of 73 students - 17 freshmen, 15 sophomores, 17 juniors, and 24 seniors - was joined by 34 middle school musicians for a special side-by-side performance of two pieces.

The concert featured a particular highlight: guest conductor Mr. Stephen Pratt, Professor of Music Emeritus from the IU Jacobs School of Music, led the ensemble in Holst's Second Suite, a cornerstone of concert band literature. Mr. Pratt, who is highly sought after nationwide, brought a wealth of expertise to this memorable performance.
