Cell Phone Legislation Effective July 2024
As we plan for the 2024-2025 school year, please be aware that Indiana recently passed legislation to restrict student cell phone use in schools. Prior to this legislation being passed, Washington Township middle schools implemented a no-cell phone expectation that required cell phones to be in student lockers during the school day. This change was well received by staff and families and has positively impacted the learning environment. Starting next school year, student cell phone usage will be restricted in all schools. Please note that cell phones must be concealed and out of sight during instructional time. The goal of this statewide legislation is to improve student engagement, behavior, and mental health, all of which can be negatively impacted by cell phone use. The district greatly appreciates the continued partnership of students, parents, and families as we implement “no cell phone zone” expectations district-wide next year.
