Re: UPDATE – Incident at North Central High School & School Safety

Dr. Woodson Video Message to Washington Township Community:

This morning, two students met outside North Central at arrival and engaged in a verbal altercation. The altercation continued inside and one student began to stab the other student with a knife. Staff quickly intervened and the student with the weapon was swiftly apprehended and detained. The injured student received immediate medical treatment from a school nurse and was transported to the hospital. Since this is an active police investigation, any additional information about the incident or the two students involved will be provided by IMPD.

We greatly appreciate our staff’s immediate action and intervention as well as support from IMPD in collaboration with WT Police Department and other emergency response personnel. As an additional precaution and due to the disruption the incident caused to the learning day, the decision was made to dismiss school early at 10 AM and cancel all after school activities for North Central.

On Thursday, September 9 school will resume at North Central High School with additional security presence and support for staff. Students or staff who need counseling support should contact Mrs. Dickerson at kdickerson@msdwt.k12.in.us or 317-259-5301 x45337 to access our trained professionals available to provide support. We ask our North Central High School family to remain respectful during this challenging time and keep the student receiving medical attention in your thoughts.

School safety takes the support and active engagement of everyone. We ask for everyone’s help reporting concerns regarding potentially unsafe behavior immediately to staff. The tip line is accessible as well by calling/texting 317-672-0613 or emailing 1217@alert1.us. Parents, we need your help monitoring your child’s social media. Many of the incidents being addressed in schools stem from situations that originate on social media.

We will review our current safety protocols and remind students about our collective responsibility for ensuring safe schools. This act of violence in our schools and increased violence in our community must stop. Student and staff safety remain our top priority. Our WT Police Department will continue to work closely with IMPD to review the incident today and provide safe supervision.
