FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
25 Indy teens to serve on the 2021-2022 Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council
INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The fourth cohort of Mayor Joe Hogsett’s Indianapolis Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council (MYLC) has been selected to help inform public policies that impact young people. The students recently attended an orientation session led by the Marion County Commission on Youth (MCCOY) and their Director of Youth Engagement, Outreach & Empowerment, Bernard Mickle.
“We’re excited to welcome the newest class of Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council members, a diverse cohort from schools and neighborhoods throughout Indianapolis,” Mayor Hogsett said. “Over the coming year, these promising students will have the opportunity to make a real difference for our community, learning key leadership skills along the way.”
Mayor Hogsett reestablished the MYLC in 2018 with support from MCCOY, Leadership Indianapolis, and the Lilly Endowment to help develop the next generation of Indianapolis leaders and elevate young people’s role in making Indianapolis a safer, stronger, and more welcoming city. “While we are tremendously excited to work with this particular group of young leaders, we want our community to know they represent thousands of other teens who are capable and eager to work alongside adults to make our city a better place for all,” MCCOY President and Executive Director, John Brandon, explained. “We are working to expand the opportunities for young people to be at the table, making decisions to build the future community they want to live in.”
With COVID-19 vaccination numbers on the rise and restrictions dissipating, MYLC initiative leaders and new members are excited about the opportunity to have a greater impact this year. “Covid took away the ability to connect,” MCCOY’s Bernard Mickle stated. “I am elated to learn from these young people and more importantly, for these young people to learn and grow from each other.”
